Minimum number of particiapants per instrument:

From Monday to Friday the participants will undertake 3 daily sessions of 45 minutes each during which they can rehearse their instrument of choice one on one with their tutor. Additionally there are 2 daily classes of 45 minutes for small-band and improvisation sessions and once a week they can participate in an open "jam session".

Core (instrument) classes:

 

The core instrument classes commence with a technical and theoretical evaluation. According to their own individual levels, the participants will have the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the different improvisation systems and styles within the genre of jazz but also contemporary music all the while refining their technique, memory and composition skills. They can further refine their abilities during the rhythm and ear training exercises, learn new pieces as well as jazz standards, cover songs and adapt pieces of folk music. Harmonization and re-harmonization, rhythmic exercises and motif developments are also part of the curriculum.

Small band sessions:

During the small-band sessions, the participants get to experience the joys that come with performing in a group. It is also a great opportunity for ear training and enhancing their abilities required for playing in a group. The interactive background provides excellent grounds for personal development since members can work together on different adaptations and master the principles of free and fixed improvisations in a group setting.

 

Syllabus Small band sessions

1. Medium, medium-up swing, Ballade, Be-Bop, Jazz waltz, Funk, Fusion, Latin-American, different types of folklore songs, orchestration of the odd meter themes according to the combo composition

2. Designation of instruments according to themes and solo accompaniment

3. Designation of soloists

4. Introduction-theme-solo-quartet-theme-ending

5. Division of melody into phrases and segmentation of the different parts of the theme into instruments, vocals etc.

6. Practicing of the program

 

Improvisation sessions:

These classes are meant for the overview and study of the many different improvisation systems and scales. The participants can practice the 3 main constituents of improvisation both separately and in a joint manner: the melodic (motivic), the harmonic and rhythmic improvisation. Developing creativity, exercises based on formal and informal aspects further enrich the lessons. The concepts of solo performance is also introduced and practiced. Participants will exercise motif development, construction- and breakdown.

Jam session:

The jam sessions provide excellent grounds for rendering and experiencing laid-back performances. This is an optimal setting for putting the acquired knowledge into practice and experience creative self-expression in a group setting.

Duration of the training: 2 weeks, 50 classes

Certification:

At the end of training, Kodolányi János University of Applied Sciences as an accredited institution for adult education will issue a certificate for each participant.

Lectures on music:

We provide the participants with the opportunity to take part in the cultural programs below in order to gain valuable practical knowledge and experience regarding the different aspects of the Hungarian culture and civilization.

During two week days there will be 2 lectures in English of 90 minutes each.

These lectures will be held by the members of the academic staff of Kodolányi János University of Applied Sciences as well as guest lecturers.

1. Co-existence of the different cultures in Hungary

2. The Kodály-system

3. The relationship of jazz and Hungarian folk music

4. Hungarian traditions and customs in music

5. Hungarian composers of the XX century

6. The main branches and representatives of contemporary Hungarian music

7. Contemporary music and ethno-jazz in Hungary

8. The main folk instruments of the Carpathian basin

Accommodation will be provided in the guest lecturer apartments of KJU.

The offer is valid for the Székesfehérvár campus of Kodolányi János University of Applied Sciences and for intervals that fall outside the regular school semesters. Any other arrangement is subject to previous agreement. The cost of meals and accommodation is orientating, the final cost depends on timing and the number of participants.
