English Foundation Course

The English Foundation Course (EFC) provides a route to entry onto the Bachelor or Master Degree course you have been accepted for on application to KJU. This means that you will be a registered student at Kodolanyi Janos University for the period of 2 semesters and your student status is extended on the condition that you meet the requirements of completion.

Description of the Program

The EFC is primarily designed for students who need to improve their English language and/or academic skills to university level fluency and get immersion into European and Hungarian culture.

Modules:

English in Use (Grammar & Writing): The aim of the course is to develop students’ English language competence. There will be a focus on grammar, reading, speaking and writing skills, as well as a focus on expressing ideas in English with accuracy and clarity in the field of academic language as well.

Communication Skills (Oral): The aim of the course is to raise students’ communication skills to achieve B2 or C1 level of General English Communication through the analysis of public speeches, in-class discussions and different kinds of speaking tasks in following topics: Environment Protection, Globalization, Business, History/Politics, Travel, Social Issues.

Business English: The course objectives are to learn the key business language necessary to participate in an international work environment; to learn about the business concepts, developments in business and how business works in different cultures; to raise awareness of cross-cultural issues in the workplace. To gain a solid foundation of Business English for a range of workplace situations; analyses and interpret texts and discuss topics of general interest to business people; demonstrate proficiency with the vocabulary of the business world, to develop language skills required in order to conduct international business in English; organize effective business meetings, making presentations in English; demonstrate appropriate use of English grammar.

EU Studies: Course objectives are as well to provide a solid understanding of what the European Union is, how it functions, what are its fundamental principles, how its legal system works to gain a valid foundation of the European Union and its internal market functions, analyses and interpret texts and discuss topics concerning EU system and law; demonstrate proficiency with the vocabulary of the legal and political world; better understand the relationship between law and economics, history, politics and international relations; gain insight on the EU’ effects on the member states as to develop language skills required to understand and comprehend how the EU is governed.

Hungarian as a foreign language:  Course objectives are to achieve a basic understanding of the Hungarian language and to create a positive attitude to acquiring the basics of Hungarian language Inquisitiveness

Course content: most common sentences of daily interactions, formulation of Hungarian sounds and words, understanding Hungarian language structure, Colloquialisms and slang, Formal vs informal language

The EFC study offers an academic environment where:

Students who successfully complete the EFC will earn a place in a BA /MA course at KJU on the condition they will have attained the pass mark by the end of the EFC.
